Welcome to Shmoney

Shmoney is part of a fast-growing movement of alternative currency networks. This is a movement that is both local and global, linking like-minded people in co-productive trading systems all over the world. One such example in the UK is the network of “Local Exchange Trading Systems” (lets), where groups create their own currency and pay for mailings and credits to start trading. An estimated 300 lets and time banks operate in Britain, numbering 100,000 people.
Sister schemes have been gaining international press, for example on the 8th April 09 “The Estonian Bank of Happiness” announced its first ever transaction based on exactly this concept.

Time is Shmoney

Shmoney is a new website where time actually IS money, where people can exchange jobs, interact with others and build their own sustainable economies.
Based on the idea of time credits, Shmoney will facilitate co-operative working on a platform that brings this concept to everyone on the internet:
1) I post a job that I want done
2) you do the job for me
3) I give you a sum of Shmoney that is equal to the TIME spent doing the job (i.e. 3 hours work = 3 time credits or "squids")
4) you spend that Shmoney on someone doing a job for you

The Benefits

• People interact and work with each other within networks of any size that may be local but not restricted by location.?
• People with skills but no work can develop their own community trading network. This has great scope for those who are retired, out of work or have skills that do not fit the current job market. Shmoney brings people to work together.
• Shmoney encourages economies based on trust and mutual benefit, not strategy and competition.
• Shmoney facilitates communication with other timebank projects in this country and the rest of the world.

We are currently developing the first version of the website for testing. This space will be a hub for all things Shmoney: Our activities, timebank news from around the world, publications and events.
